Make-up and skincare can be a wonderful way for mothers and teens to bond. Instill these failsafe habits into your budding beauty guru from early on., allowing for some healthy experimentation without damaging that delicate skin.
Back to (skin) school
Cleanse, tone and moisturise, simple right? Well kind of. It’s important that when we are teaching our tweens about the basics of skincare that we focus on a holistic approach. What we put in and on, is what we get out. Healthy, skin savvy foods and plenty of water (what we need to flush out toxins), does wonders for the skin. Think more green and less beige when it comes to food groups.
Sunscreen is a proven “anti-ager” so becoming sun-smart early on is the gift that keeps on giving, especially later on in life.
Eucerin Sun Oil Control Dry Touch Face SPF50+ R269.95
Spotty tweens will often gravitate towards harsh foaming cleansers that they think will banish those pesky blackheads, but this can be a harmful approach. A ‘soapy’ cleanser, usually foams a lot and can be very drying on the skin and damage the acid mantle (essential for warding off bacteria). Instead, use something gentle but effective, look for ingredients like glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, as these will help to exfoliate the skin while keeping the acid mantle at the correct PH balance.
Nuxe Very Rose Radiance Peeling Lotion R495
Take a self-care moment with your tween, by making a homemade face mask together, not only will it bring on the giggles (excellent stress reliever) but will make for gorgeous glowing skin afterwards.
Try: ½ ripe Avocado mashed smoothly, add 1 Teaspoon of plain yoghurt and ½ teaspoon of honey, combine to make a paste. Apply and leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse.
Make-up milestones
Experimentation with make-up is bound to happen, so provide your tween with a make-up bag of products that won’t cause breakouts or skin irritation. Go for oil free formulas or tinted moisturisers that have more of a gel texture than heavy coverage. Then go in with a high coverage spot concealer, that can help provide coverage to spotty areas, while still allowing the rest of the skin to breath.
