Hello to colour and all my favourites for the month of August
Retro pop
From furniture to lighting, adding a pop of retro appeal to your home is very on-trend. We’re basically bringing back the ’70s, baby! While this era was way before my time, I am spotting its revival and have come to appreciate it within the decor world, too. From bright colours such as the Purple Rain Table Lamp from the design label Joe Paine to curved furniture, the retro-pop appeal may not be for everyone, but
is definitely worth a try if it catches your attention.
Tiling Time
Introducing colour into your space is a wonderful way to personalise it, while adding visual interest. Patterned and colourful tiles are right on-trend, so why not try shades of blue and green, natural warm tones, warm coral and terracotta? Don’t forget the classic black and white, both of which are always a popular choice. Even though they aren’t the brightest, they certainly work well with any space. Break the expanse of field tiles with patterns to break up the space and draw the eye across the room, or use themen masse to create a feature your family and guests will love.
Burn bright by candlelight
When I say this candle smells as delicious as it looks, I am not exaggerating. My friend recently bought this candle for me as a gift and I have fallen in love with everything about it. Besides its local appeal (you know how we love a good ‘local is lekker’ moment), they are handcrafted and such a beautiful gifting idea. The scents are oh-so heavenly, with Funfetti Confetti being my current fave since it’s the only one I have right now, but I’m eager to get my hands on a few new scents.
Artistic inspiration
Vases are such an understated decor piece in the home. We don’t pay that much attention to them, but they can truly lend themselves to the style and aesthetic of the space, adding to a more modern and contemporary look, or perhaps play on the rustic elements instead. I fell in love with these Mykonos Metal vases from @home due to their artistic appeal and loved the muted tones of colour. At least now when I receive flowers, I’m not scrambling to try and find a vase!
Winter wines
While winter seems to be drifting away, the cold chill that lingers in the air can’t stop us from reaching for a bottle of our favourite Cabernet blends. While I’m not particularly a red wine drinker, colder nights certainly call for a more robust wine that is exuberant, vibrant and well-toned, while standing up and welcoming hearty dishes. Perhaps a 2017 Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 Fleur du Cap Series Privée Cabernet Sauvignon or even a more mature 1994 Chateau Libertas is your kind of wine. Either way, the selections are endless, so be sure to check out Vinoteque for an unmatched array of wines to warm the soul.
A Signature of note
Growing up, my mum would often be sporting her very famous signature red lip when we’d go out for dinner or she needed to dress up for any occasion. That red lip was not just a colour but a confident statement to the world, helping her to feel empowered, strong and beautiful, too. While it may just be a lipstick to some, those who get it, get it. Happy Women’s Month to all you beautiful human beings!
Time to travel
One of the most colourful cities in the world, and a place I cannot wait to visit myself, Havana in Cuba is at the top of my travel list! While the buildings in Old Town Square are not bright, they contribute to the pastel shades that are a feast for the eyes. Besides the appeal of its historic Spanish colonial architecture, Cuba is filled with an array of cultures, people, art and great food. Their ability to have retained much of their history makes it one of the main reasons I’d love to visit this beautiful country sometime in the near future (manifesting my holiday dreams).
