Pearl Ntshehi: Leading the charge for positive change

In the heart of Mzansi, a beacon of hope and inspiration shines bright. Her name is Pearl Ntshehi, an advocate for youth empowerment and representation trailblazing across the nation.

From the vibrant township of Mamelodi, Pearl Ntshehi is not your average beauty queen. While her stunning looks catapulted her into the limelight as a Miss South Africa Top 10 finalist in 2022, it’s her passion for social change and community empowerment that truly sets her apart.

Heart of gold

From the township herself, Pearl has first-hand experience of the negative expectations many have of children from these areas. However, she held on to the conviction not to conform to those expectations. “I wanted to be the beacon of hope for young people, especially those who come after me,” she says. Now, at 27 years old, she is armed with three law degrees – Bachelor of commerce in Law, an Honours in Bachelor of Commerce, and an LLB degree.

“I have the heart to serve and aspire to make an impact on the lives of the people I meet (in person or online) – especially young minds from the township. I want them to thrive in uncharted waters.”

Currently awaiting admission as an attorney of the High Court, Pearl’s commitment to justice extends far beyond the courtroom. As the first female president of the Students’ Representative Council at Eduvos (formally known as Pearson Institute), she has long championed the importance of female leadership in driving meaningful discourse and progress.

It was during her time as a student, travelling to and from campus, that she became more aware of the needs of those around her. “I recall seeing the same people doing the same thing at the same spot. I saw them when I left for school and when I came back,” she explains.

“That’s when I saw the need for intervention, to contribute to shaping young minds and shift their mindset, to show them they’re able to achieve more and deserve a better life. I wanted to be more than a tangible representation of a dream realised, but also help others to work towards their dreams.”

Chasing her dreams

Though she wasn’t crowned Miss South Africa 2022, Pearl believes that the experience was a huge blessing. “I entered for two reasons: myself and my community. Being part of Miss South Africa has taught me that I’m worthy of every opportunity presented; I like to consider it as my ‘self-cav’ reaching a new level. I’ve also learned never to underestimate the power of a platform given to you,” she says.

Pearl’s impact doesn’t stop at her exuberant confidence and positive aura. She founded Project 31 in 2019, an organisation aimed at motivating and empowering disadvantaged South African youth. The project provides mentorship and equips young people with soft skills that will prepare them for the workforce and society as adults.

The project was aptly named after Proverbs 31 in the Bible, which focuses on the development of men and women in relation to each other, she explains. “This became the analogy of how I think the world focuses on developing the girl-child, and the boy-child is often forgotten about. We at Project 31 aim to empower the youth irrespective of gender.

“I would love to see the next generation thrive. I want them to know that it is possible and that they can do it, regardless of where they’re from. That’s why I decided to register Project 31, to help fill the gap and contribute to alleviating the unemployment rate among South African youth.”

For her dedication to community upliftment, she was named an ambassador for the ‘Play Your Part’ campaign by Brand SA, which aims to encourage South Africans to use some of their time, money, skills or goods to contribute to a better future for all. It’s an accolade befitting her tireless efforts to making a difference.

“It’s been such a blessing and a dream come true! I’ve always wanted to be a ‘Play Your Part’ ambassador – it was even on my vision board,” she proudly gushes. “When you’re an ambassador, you get access to a whole new network of other ambassadors and corporate brands that can help you. You also get support from the Brand South Africa team, which benefits the projects you’re involved in.”

A force for change

In October last year, Pearl further cemented her status as a champion of change at the #BeTheChange panel discussion hosted by The FIX during Mental Health Awareness Month. There, she urged the youth of South Africa to embrace their imperfections and strive for greatness, to embrace their unique journey and make a positive impact on the world around them.

“I love engaging in dialogue that is meaningful and enlightens the audience while everyone gets insight on a ‘sensitive’ topic,” she says. “I felt that I was playing my part for mental-health awareness. These conversations help to break down stereotypes, and hearing others’ perspectives and stories helps. I hope that those who attended left feeling full, seen and understood.”

A strong advocate for smashing stereotypes and being non-conforming, Pearl understands how mental health can look different for all individuals. This is why she encourages the youth to be patient and take time away from the online space, which can often be overstimulating. “Showing up can look different each day – don’t be hard on yourself. Time away from any screen can help.”

Girl about town!

Pearl is making her mark with each initiative she dedicates her heart and soul to. As somewhat of an ace content creator and style icon (check out her IG feed if you don’t believe us!), many young South African women consider her to be a relatable role model. With her infectious laugh and dazzling smile, her light can be felt beyond the screen. However, she remains humble in her endeavours.

“I don’t want people to remember me by my accolades but rather by how I have changed lives, and how I made them feel during our interactions,” she says. As for what she’s getting up to for the rest of 2024, Pearl is looking to spread her wings across international waters, but she’s not giving out any spoilers just yet: “All I can say is, be on the lookout and be ready!” With anticipation building, we applaud our girl as she takes on the great responsibility of showing us the right path in life – this is no small task. Good luck, Pearl, and may the odds be forever in your favour!
