All you need to know about lash extensions

As great as they are, lash extensions come with a few considerations.

Lash extensions have revolutionised the world of beauty. Who wouldn’t want instant fuller, longer lashes without the hassle of daily mascara application or the limitations of strip lashes? But as great as they are, lash extensions come with a few considerations.

Maybe it’s not for you?

While lash extensions offer convenience and long-term benefits, the initial cost of application is higher compared to strip lashes or mascara. It doesn’t end there – they also require a fair amount of maintenance. To preserve their longevity, touch-up appointments are needed every few weeks, which adds to the cost and time commitment. Aftercare involves cleaning them with a soft-bristle brush and special cleanser or distilled water. You also need to be careful about what eye make-up and moisturisers you use (no oil-based or waterproof formulations, for instance). While lash extensions are durable, certain activities such as swimming or excessive rubbing of the eyes may affect their appearance and how long they last. (If you suffer from allergies or dry eyes, think twice.) Improper application or removal of lash extensions can damage your natural lashes. Choose a lash technician that is accredited and well-trained, with lots of experience on their resumé. Also, some people may have a bad reaction to lash extension application (see ‘The Catch’ section, below right).

The transformation

Lash extensions can work magic on your overall appearance, enhancing your natural beauty in several ways.

Brighter Eyes: By adding length and volume to your lashes, extensions draw attention to your eyes, making them appear larger, brighter and more captivating. Youthful Appearance: Fuller, voluminous lashes can create a youthful, refreshed appearance, and help to minimise the look of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of ageing around the eyes.

Balanced Features: Well-defined lashes frame the eyes and balance the proportions of your face, accentuating your facial features.

Confidence Boost: You can wake up every day knowing that your eyes look effortlessly stunning without the need for make-up.

The catch

Before getting lash extensions, consider the following risks.

Eye Irritation: Lash extensions that come into contact with the eyes or irritate the delicate skin around the eye area can cause redness, discomfort, itching or swelling, necessitating prompt removal or adjustment.

Infection: Poor hygiene practices or improper application technique can cause bacterial or fungal infections around the eyes. Allergic Reactions: Those with sensitive skin or allergies may react to the adhesive, tools and/or lash material used (this could be synthetic fibre, silk or animal hairs), leading to inflammation (and in rare cases, blindness).

Damage to Natural Lashes: If not applied or removed properly, excessive weight or tension from lash extensions can weaken your natural lashes over time, resulting in breakage or thinning.
