Appointments? Pain? Charging devices? An old-school shave remains the most fuss-free method of hair removal. Here’s our guide to the smoothest clean shave you can manage.
With countless spa treatments and hair-removal products making the rounds, shaving is still the most convenient and affordable method of hair removal. Nothing beats the silky sensation of freshly shaved legs or a smooth jaw. And, of course, you are 100% doing it wrong if you don’t make at least one person touch your skin while you look on smiling smugly or waggling your brows.
Silky Soft
First things first, thicker hair regrowth after shaving is a myth. Hair may appear thicker when growing back in after a shave, but it’s just an optical illusion. Your hair-growth rate and volume is controlled from within, not external factors such as shaving. So now that that’s out the way, let’s pull those smooth moves!
Avoid Dry Shaving
Dry shaving is not ideal as it increases the risk of irritation and nicks. Try shaving near the end of your bath or shower to give your skin time to soften for a closer, safer shave. Cooler water is better since warm water tends to over-soften your skin, making it vulnerable to cuts.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating helps shed dead skin cells that clog your blades and reduce your razor’s efficiency. A natural loofah or face cloth that’s not too abrasive is best for removing dead skin cells without overstimulating your skin to the point of sensitivity. Work in long strokes against the direction of the hair growth to gently remove the dead skin cells.
Opt For Shaving Cream
Most people think soap and water is the best way to guarantee a smooth glide; while this is partially true, it is discouraged as it tends to have a drying effect on the skin. Your skin may be left feeling smooth but look cracked and flaky after drying. A foam or gel formulated specifically for shaving is most ideal, while hair conditioner or a luxurious body oil eases the glide in a pinch. Nourishing products will keep your skin soft and supple post-shave.
Tip: Your instinct may be to press harder to grab more hair – don’t. It creates dimpling, which will increase the chance of nicks, patchiness and a less than smooth shave overall.
Go With The Flow
Glide against the direction of growth. Shaving upwards will get the smoothest results, that’s why exfoliation is so important; getting right up to the hair shaft is essential. For tricky areas such as the underarm, shave upwards to slice the exposed shaft, then in the reverse direction to get the root.
Splash Your Pores
Just like with your skincare routine, warm water opens your skin’s pores and a cold rinse is needed to close them. After you shave, make sure you’ve rinsed all the foam off your skin, and then turn the tap to cold for your cool rinse.
Moisturise Your Skin
Slap a generous amount of hydrating moisturiser or body butter on your freshly shaved skin immediately after drying off to prevent drying out and flaking. Remember that very scented and harsh products may cause irritation, so stick to a clean and rich formula.
Tip: Use sunscreen at all times, regardless of your level of exposure. After shaving, your skin is more prone to sensitivity, and damaging rays are able to penetrate more easily, causing far more damage than usual. Try avoiding direct sunlight for a day after shaving to reduce the chances of irritation and harm.
