Theo Ngobeni On Style

The social media age has brought with it a myriad of good and not so good things. Part of the latter is an obsession with designer labels and acquiring them as a way of making a style statement. The reality is that wearing designer labels doesn’t necessarily make you stylish. In fact, many guys can look pretty gaudy dripped head-to-toe in designer.

You don’t have to break the bank to look good. It’s possible to look high-end on a budget. Here are Theo Ngobeni seven keys to achieving this.

Shoes make a massive statement

Right or wrong, I judge a person’s level of style on their shoes. You can cut a lot of corners style-wise, but cheap shoes immediately takes down the quality of your look. Not a lot of people understand this, so if you are able to, it immediately gives you an edge. Invest in shoes crafted from quality materials, with considered shape and construction. Take excellent care of them, this should include using shoe trees and cleaning them after wear.

Invest in statement outwear

A high-quality statement jacket or coat is a cornerstone of any stylish man’s wardrobe. This doesn’t have to break the bank, and if you get it right, whether it be a bomber, a leather biker-style jacket or a trench coat, you will engineer the perception of it being high-end.

Nail the fit and details

Tailoring is the quickest way to turn an off-the-rack piece into one that is perceived to be more expensive than it is. Finding a great tailor is a must because they will help you customise the fit in a way that elevates your look instantly.

Choose solid, basic pieces

Classic and timeless must be your guide. Pieces in solid colours, with minimal to no branding or graphics often look higher end than loud, bold colours and branding. For example, wearing a leather biker-style jacket, a crisp white tee, raw denim and fresh, white kicks will communicate a powerful style message in the most subtle way.

Accessories matter

Accessorising – whether through bracelets, watches, rings, sunglasses or fragrances – is an exclamation point on any look. It tells people you pay attention to the details, and elevates your look with relatively minimal effort. Never compromise on your scent and watch. They are second only to your shoes in terms of the things that are able to give you a high-end feel, without breaking the bank.

Iron your clothes!

This may seem obvious to most, but the amount of guys who overlook its importance is wild. You immediately devalue your look by wearing creased clothing. Ironing needs to be factored into the time it takes to get dressed. Alternatively, pick an outfit the night before, and prep it all then. Also, never drive in a suit jacket. You’ll arrive with the jacket looking completely wrinkled and make a poor impression on whoever you’re meeting. Hang it up just for the journey.

Grooming is critical

If your clothes are looking sharp, but you’ve neglected grooming, it will have an impact on how you’re perceived. Make sure to get regular haircuts and beard trims. Once every 10 days is a good marker for most men, although once a week is ideal. For guys who are balding and shave their heads, do so every second day to avoid that scruffy, stubbly look. Develop a consistent skincare routine, and make sure to keep your nails clean and trimmed (you won’t believe how many women pay attention to this). Finally, dental health should be a priority. Brush and floss daily and be aware of how what you eat affects your breathe (keep some gum handy).
