The ultimate staycations: SA Edition

Discover a whole new world right in your backyard.

Current economic reality means international travel is a glimmer on a distant horizon for many. ‘Staycations’ present an opportunity to holiday in your backyard, and they won’t break the bank. South Africa is often described as ‘a world in one country’.

From rugged coastlines to craggy mountains, our natural resources create a wonderland to explore. Stir in a rich, multicultural history stretching back to humankind’s earliest beginnings and the possibilities are endless. As winter gives way to spring, book a more affordable stay at one of these exciting local destinations for a whole new perspective on the place we call home.

 ZWAKALA, LIMPOPO

Hidden in the lush Magoebaskloof is a gaggle of enticing eco cottages and Scandi-style wood cabins that blend into the pristine environment. From as little as R950 per night, choose a cottage with electricity or get back to basics in one where candles and donkey boilers create the perfect rustic experience. Zwakala River Retreat is also the home of the fabulous vibe that drives Zwakala Brewery.

The adventures are laid-back here – enjoy a brewery tour and sip on naturally brewed beer, or float gently down the river on a tube. It’s an ancient and beautiful place where you can easily disappear into the landscape – go exploring, or for the less energetic, treat yourself to some pampering in The River Spa.

FARMHOUSE 58, GAUTENG

A regenerative travel experience that immerses guests in nature, Farmhouse 58 combines wabisabi principles with natural African design details. Located in the Cradle of Humankind, 45km west of Joburg, it’s a sanctuary offering a respite from the city hustle. Simplicity and easy elegance invite you to step out into nature and leave your shoes behind… You’ll eat well – the chef picks the best from the biodynamic garden to use in the seasonal menus.

You can get hands-on joining the harvest or an artist’s workshop. Experience the birthplace of humankind at the official visitor centre, Maropeng, just 20 minutes’ drive away. Or visit nearby Bothongo Nature Reserve to see lions, white rhinos and buffaloes. For the more active humans, there are incredible cycle routes through the Cradle area.

BOSCHENDAL, CAPE WINELANDS

Nestled against the Simonsberg, midway between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, it’s like a world in one estate. Stay in the Orchard Cottages and explore the farm on hiking/biking trails, garden tours and horse rides, visit the art gallery and enjoy good food. Other iconic Winelands experiences, from Babylonstoren’s famous gardens to the Franschhoek Wine Tram, are on the doorstep.

HILLHOUSE, KZN

The rolling green hills and misty romance of the Midlands are barely an hour from Durban. In a particularly green corner known as Dargle, Hillhouse overlooks Midmar Dam with views that never end. Calling it picturesque falls way short of the mark. Indigenous mist-belt forest, offering walks and cycle trails, surrounds accommodation in two sheds converted by architect/farmer Nick Crooks.

Botanical enthusiasts will love the succulent garden and the hothouse filled with unusual plants. Drink in the silence, breathe the tranquillity and do yoga in the stillness – or you have the entire Midlands Meander, with its painters, sculptors and potters, scattered along the gorgeous country roads. hillhouse.co.za

FIREFLY FALLS, GARDEN ROUTE

The Crags (a name that just oozes rugged adventure and outdoor pursuits), in the forested hills near Plettenberg Bay, is home to a glamping experience of note. Choose a Forest tent or Safari cabin and immerse yourself in this wonderland. Walking, swimming, horse-riding, kayaking, paragliding; just name your adventure and the Firefly team will make it happen for you. The big attraction here is its proximity to some of the country’s best-known hiking trails (coastal and forest). If you prefer to follow a different kind of trail, there are craft distilleries and breweries to seek out, and a wine route in the hills behind Plett.
