5 Savvy grooming pointers for whiskered gents

Is your facial hair in a tangle? Looking wild and woolly this winter? The good news is that beard care doesn’t have to be a hassle. Ditch the caveman look and get those whiskers into order (while avoiding common mistakes) with our five top beard-grooming tips.

1. Keep it clean, Dean

While some men believe that a beard’s natural oils are enough to keep it clean and hydrated, if you have dry hair, L’Oreal Paris advises: “A good beard wash can help remove dirt, oil, and other buildup from your beard while cleansing the skin underneath.” Oh, and avoid regular soap, says Live Bearded, rather use “real beard wash”.

2. Hydration’s key, Lee

Hydrating your beard is the first step in getting the right look. YouTuber D Hyde suggests spraying tap or bottled water onto your whiskers using a small water spray bottle, and you can add leave-in conditioner if you like. He says beard oils are also easy to apply and give that fuzz a healthy sheen.

3. Trim like a pro, Bro

The right equipment’s crucial if you’re going for the barber-sharp look. Once you’ve invested in a good beard trimmer with assorted attachments, it’s all about mastering the upwards and downwards movements, taking care around the corners and going “against the growth”, advises TikToker @roque_80.

4. Don’t forget to comb, Jerome

The final step in your regime is using a comb or beard brush to smooth your facial hair. A hairbrush will do, too. Simply using your hand to smooth it won’t really do the job! West Cork Beard Company gives great advice on achieving “maximum fullness”. If you follow their advice, you’ll “end up with a straighter, cleaner and healthier beard”, they say.

5. Learn from the pros, Joe

While it’s great knowing what to do, it’s also useful learning what to steer clear of doing when beard grooming, from avoiding neck fuzz to shaving off your mustache when you have other facial hair.
